About Us

Inspired Food since 1982

In the beginning
Peter Lawn, together with Andries de Maaker and Peter Sloane purchased Real Foods in 1982 and so the journey began. Peter Lawn subsequently took full ownership a couple of years later.

At that time Real Foods supplied and sold Natural Foods products from its small warehouse and outlet store in Morningside and through a number of franchisees, which were retained for the next 1-2 years.

In 1984 Real Foods launched the bulk bin business for Woolworths and Big Fresh, which was to last the next 15-16 years. Real Foods revolutionised the fresh food shopping experience sourcing food products from around the world and working hard to keep those bins full. In later years they would launch the same concept in Woolworth’s sister company Franklins in Australia with huge success.

Vitasoy, Mori-nu Tofu and Celestial Teas were among the first international brands that Real Foods managed and over the following years many more followed. When Vitasoy shareholder, Lion Dairy and Drinks, took over distribution of the brand in New Zealand in 2012 Vitasoy was the market leader and had firmly established its place in the grocery market.
